The Darwin Myth

My mom was a little upset by the last blog I posted. A life-long Christian and recent LDS convert, she can’t seem to get past the whole “I didn’t come from monkeys!” idea.

Her response was actually thus:

My goodness sake. Such an uproar over a obviously skewed post about a teacher and student. Perhaps thou doest protest to much? Did you also know that Darwin withdrew his theory before he died? Not rhetoric, nor fallacy. Check it out…. By the way, I’m glad you have a higher power and I’m glad you express you’re opinion, I just gracefully request you allow others to have theirs without you beating them up for having them. Love Mom

So I felt it necessary to write this next blog:

The Darwin Myth

Please, no one take this as me beating up anyone. If it does not fit with your own beliefs, go ahead and keep on having them. That is what faith is all about.

But I do not believe religion has a place in science and that perpetuating myths about science while trying to prove that a literal translation of a 2,000 year old book is a fallacy for religion.

If they want any kind of ground to stand on, the religious leaders should get out of the arguments of science and start living in faith again, not trying to dismiss the enormous amount of scientific evidence and data that has been collected for hundreds of years.

Wasn’t Galileo and Newton enough? The Church should have learned then that it cannot dispute evidence with a text handed down from king to king to wield over the masses.

To those that continue to dispute evolution and try to force creationism in schools: Keep your faith. It is called FAITH because it needs no evidence. When you enter the realm of science and try to dispute evidence with your own personal faith, you are not helping yourself or the faith you stand for.

And so, the darwin myth:

“Darwin recanted his theory on his death-bed”

Site

A simple google search of “darwin recants theory on deathbed” brought this one up as the first hit. Read accounts by Darwin’s family as to the last of his days. Especially the part about his wife.

“It should be noted that for most of her married life Emma was deeply pained by the irreligious nature of Charles’s views, and would have been strongly motivated to have corroborated any story of a genuine conversion, if such had occurred. She never did.”

And of course, my research wouldn’t be complete without Wikipedia

If you can’t trust Wikipedia, who can you trust? ;)

Trudat. The Darwinian Recant is the last and final meager attempt by Creationists to disprove Evolution.

Notice they never seem to argue against it on any evidential grounds, and that the only way they seem to attack it is a) with the Bible (which is not evidence!) or b) by saying that Darwin “took it back.” ;)

Anyone with half a brain or more would be able to tell you that the old monkey-to-man myth about evolution is just that: a myth. Evolution cites the existence of a COMMON ANCESTOR, which is neither monkey nor man. This idea of common ancestry is proven day in and day out, with the existence of homogenous structures, and has been seen in action many times (every time a new species is discovered which is a close relative of an existing species).

Careful- don’t let any of this intelligent thought cloud your ideological ignorance.

78 degrees Kelvin, actually, not Fahrenheit. (78º Kelvin = -319.27º Fahrenheit)

okay mr. graham were did you learn about kelvin. I use kelvin all the time so I understand it without the translation. Thanks though. Why do you say that Im that cold? Is it because I’m stubborn in my political theory and reasoning that you cant make me change? why thats not true either and you know it, the two of you both know thats not true. There are some issues that I lean toward the left on, and then there are some that I’m very right on. So therefore if the two of you can actually come up with a decent argument on your view points, besides the same old garbage that you always seem to disclose. So I’m looking forward to this. oh btw I’m coming home probally in a couple of weeks or so, so we need to chill and hangout.

No, you’re a right-wing nut. Nice attempt to look more independent, though, but the blind allegiance automatically disqualifies you from that.

Hey, Babe! You see how worked up she’s getting about this? She even is asking for a decent argument over why her internal temperature is abnormal!

How long do you think we can keep it up before she really gets mad?

    lol!

    And she wants to ‘chill’!

Oh God! I’m dying of laughter!
