Check out the calendar of events for the Cozmic Cafe in Placerville under Sunday, August 12th. That night from 4-8 pm there will be a benefit concert for Sterling Fisher. Sterling, the band, will be performing as well as other local artists. $5 minimum donation suggested. If you don’t know, Sterling (the boy, not the band) is eight years old and was hit by a car in June while riding his bike. If you will be in the area, please stop by. I will be there. Thank you for your support.

Barbie Dolls and Message Boards
So, with the toys, the dog food and the toothpaste, the number one problem with importing goods from China without protective tariffs is no longer just the fact that it is squashing the manufacturing jobs of Americans who have worked hard, paid their union dues, and tried to raise their families. And you wonder why I don’t shop at Wal-Mart?
I don’t mind paying a few cents or a few dollars more if it means my fellow Americans can go home at night with a little more job security. Now-a-days, I am very, very glad to pay more for products manufactured in America because I don’t want lead in my GI Joe, and I don’t want to brush my teeth with anti-freeze. ‘Nuff said.
Along the same line of socially conscious shopping, I and fellow employees where I work visited different businesses on Placerville Drive (Placerville, Ca) to see if these business would put a National Night Out flyer in their windows or their community bulletin boards. I am pleased to report that many companies put the flyer in their front windows, and a few that didn’t allow flyers in their front window, had community boards near or at the front of their stores. Unfortunately, a few could only agree to put the flyer up in their break-rooms, where only a handful of tired, hungry workers would glance at the flyer before returning to their minimum wage jobs.
I understand that in a large city, a community message board could be overwhelming and it would just be a nuisance to keep it up and maintain it. But folks, this is Placerville. Never heard of it? Of course not. It’s about 10,000 strong as far as population. A small community where a bulletin board would completely fit the slow, small town pace. And so, I’ve compiled a list of those that have agreed to post flyers in their window or message board, and a list of those that cared too much about the image of their windows to recognize the community that makes them successful:
Thank you to these companies for your support of National Night Out 2007:
Del Taco
Donut Factory
Papa Murphey’s Take n Bake
Clean n Save Cleaners
Pizza Pro’s
Sears
Rocky’s Art and Framing
Clifton and Warren Feed Store
Walkers Document Services
Foster’s Freezes (who will also add the date to their marque)
Noah’s Ark Organic Food Store
And the companies I will no longer be visiting:
Office Max
Raley’s
Wells Fargo
El Dorado Savings
Blockbuster
California Check Cashing
Home Depot (not only that, they say they are environmentally friendly, but they are oh-so-friendly to Fox News, a channel that constantly disputes climate change and global warming).

Thanks for last night
I do not have any medical updates at this time. If you want medical information please read the blog from Friday night and the blog from June 14th
I would like this opportunity to thank everyone who came to Sartory Coffee last night. It was wonderfull to get out and meet a lot of the people who I only know through cyberspace. I think we all needed a social event to feel some joy and love. Rob and Becca made their first journey into society since the life altering event of June 9th. What this was about was 2 things: to help raise money for them to continue to stay with Sterling at the hospital and to network out and get the word out on Sterling’s medical condition. What I am trying to do is get in touch with as many people as possible in the hope that someone somewhere will know of or know someone who can help us find a treatement for Sterling. We want our little guy back. While we may not find a treatement that will make him the way he was pre accident we may find a treatement that will send a boy home who will have the ability to give and recieve love. There is also the possibility that we may find a treatement that will leave him with only physical scars, that would be great beyond what I can put in words. Whatever the outcome, all of us have been touched by the kindness of people we know and complete strangers. I am changed for the rest of my life. I as well as our family will always feel compelled to act instead of watching when someone is in need.
There will be a benefit tonight at the same location as last night where EVERYONE who wants to come may attend. Strangers, family from both sides and friends may attend. All ages are welcome. please read the blog from yesterday for location. Again, thank you to everyone, we all really needed that, but our crusade will not end untill Sterling is home and in his family’s loving arms.
No One Deserves This

Super Spiffy Spider Plant!
My spider plant was just a little baby when I got him. He was about two inches tall with maybe five leaves. I have nurtured him, taken care of him, and even almost killed him a few times (it’s my first plant, give me a break, I was learning!). It wasn’t untill a few months ago that he started getting the signature stripes on his leaves that spider plants have. He was a gift from someone at my nine-month sobriety anniversery in November of 2003.
Well, today he is a big beautiful spider plant. I checked on him today. He had been growing leaves about one every two days lately and I noticed a few days ago that the leaves were growing faster than the others could move out of the way. A stalk had grown out of the middle with small leaves peeking out of the top. This could only mean one thing: My spider plant is a mother! He’s got a baby growing on him! I am so proud!
Two Good Things I’ve Learned Today
First, the book I wrote for Advanced Composition won an A. My professor told me it was a very powerful paper. I worked damn hard on it, so I’m very proud.
Second, Barack Obama is a Leo! Now there really is no reason not to vote for him! Ok, seriously though, he is on the ball, intelligent, eloquent, and purposeful (all qualities Mr. Brush-er-Bush doesn’t possess).
Those are two good things I have learned today. I am content.
Discourse Concluded, With a Note on Republicans
As it goes, through the course of argument and debate, one may learn more about themselves as well as about others. I learned that there are some arguments that will never be settled, but that even with opposing viewpoints one may find common ground. I will never agree with the author of “My Errant Mind” regarding gun control, rape victims or the treatment of suspected criminals before being proven guilty, but I do agree that there is a huge rift in our country that needs to be closed.
I also agree that America needs an administration that is going to take care of Americans. Health care, labor, the economy, etc. I don’t know how he feels about the proposed solutions that Democrats offer for turning this nation around, but I’m pretty sure he can agree the Republicans are doing a pretty poor job. He said that he wouldn’t vote for Republican or Democrat, which is okay with me. As long as it’s not Republican.
Another word on Republicans. What’s all this talk about the glory days of the Regan administration? The man had excellent PR people that made him look great, but the man did nothing but give free rein to corporations, spend our social security, and destroy health care. He destroyed political discourse in the media by letting networks with agendas amass power (Fox News anyone?) And regardless of what any Young Republicans of America member will tell you, he DID NOT end Communism. The Red was already on its way out. “Tear down this wall!” Yeah, the people in Berlin were already tearing it down when he got there.
Now that these idiots with a ‘thing’ for changing the past to suit them have been in power for awhile and destroyed our economy, our relations with other nations, and our reputation, it is time for Americans to take back this country. It’s happening. Watch out, neocons, true Americans are on their way. We aren’t going to beat you with a Bible or throw money at you to influence you. That may be how you get things done, but real Americans do far better: We vote! We protest and make our grievances heard. We choose to spend our money in corporations that provide jobs for Americans, not India and China. We will take your Congress! Oh, we already did!
Regan was in power for eight years. This was the Republican Golden Age. Prior to that, from FDR (best president ever) on was a Golden Age for democracy. The middle class was stronger than it had ever been. People could afford to own their own homes straight out of college. Women could stay at home if they wanted. (Funny, conservatives insist women stay at home but don’t support economics that make it available for a household to run on one income). Americans could afford college out of high school. As a nation, we made major strides in ending injustice and discrimination (thought the job is far from done). These were all direct results of the New Deal and the principles put in place by the Progressives.
40 years and so much progress? Or eight years of media hype coupled with huge debt, trickle-down economics, and a growing social security crisis?
Take your pick.
It’s time for a new Golden Era.

Text: The New Verb
Text messaging has become very popular, very fast. In fact, the word text is now used as a verb by nearly everyone in my generation, as in, “Text me later,” or, “I’ll text you when I’m out of class.”
I sat in my Political Science class a few weeks ago and watched a couple pass notes to eachother while the teacher was lecturing. That’s right folks, their parents were paying for their education and they were using the time to write love letters to eachother. I could see at their hips that they were carrying mighty nice motorolas that their parents in El Dorado Hills had bought for them (I know they are from El Dorado Hills because they shared this information at a prior date). The boy was busy pretending to be busy on his spiffy new MacBook (probably just checking his myspace). I thought to myself, “Well, why don’t they just use those cell phones to text eachother? That way they wouldn’t have to wait for the teacher to turn around before throwing their notes over their shoulders.”
Then it hit me. I came up with the best text message promo slogan this side of the Mississip’! Here it is folks:
Text messaging: It’s like passing notes in class!
Ok. So maybe I’m exaggerating over the whole Mississip’ thing, but I really like it and that is all that matters.
